“Deeper, deeper… deeper still. In the darkest depths we laugh and dance”

Hellebore is such a special (yet often overlooked) plant. For me personally, Hellebore was the plant that first brought me the world of poisonous plants.

Hellebore, often called Lenten Rose or Christmas Rose, blooms in the winter or early spring - sometimes when there is still snow on the ground! I once even had a fence fall on top of a hellebore plant during a winter storm. That fence could not be lifted for many weeks. I thought my hellebore was a goner for sure. But to my surprise, when the fence was finally lifted, not only had the hellebore survived, but it had flowered. Sure, it was a little leggy, but it flowered!

When you think of a plant that can flower in circumstances that would be difficult or impossible for most other plants, what words come to mind? For me, the big one is resiliency. And this is one of the main qualities I think about when I think of this essence.

Hellebore offers their quiet strength in moments of transition. They can act as a companion when we find ourselves crossing inner thresholds, shedding old fears, and stepping into deeper clarity. Their energy is slow, deliberate, and rooted in resilience. This essence can help bring unconscious fears to light without overwhelm, making it ideal for those navigating inner work that feels layered, passed-down, or long-held.

I also find this essence helpful for when you want to work with fears and anxieties, especially those around death - either literal, physical death or inner-transformations. This essence aids in letting go of that which is no longer serving you. Hellebore does this in a way that is both clear and sharp, while still seeing the playful existent in all experience.
